Young Leaders for Indonesia

In 2007 McKinsey & Company Jakarta office set itself the aspiration of “Unleashing Indonesia”, of helping Indonesia achieve its economic and human potential. One pillar of this aspiration is an agenda of developing the future leaders of Indonesia. In 2007 the office began discussions on how to reach out to the country’s talented young people and help them become better leaders. What started as a casual discussion among young Jakarta consultants grew into a formal program supported by McKinsey’s Southeast Asian office.  In August 2008, the Jakarta office launched Youth Leadership for Indonesia (later changed to Young Leaders for Indonesia), a program targeted to high performing second and third year students in top Indonesian universities.

Young Leaders for Indonesia is an intensive leadership development program that is derived from McKinsey’s leadership development work for clients. The program was developed in consultation with two of top Indonesia’s top universities, the University of Indonesia and the Institute Technology Bandung, and from these schools we selected our first ~40 participants, based on their academic credentials, leadership experience, and problem solving potential.

Since its inception, Young Leaders for Indonesia has expanded to two programs; Young Leaders for Indonesia Kampus (YLI) and soon to be launched Young Global Leaders for Indonesia (YGLI).
